Italian High Renaissance Painter, ca.1485-1576 Italian painter active in Venice. As a young man he was taught by the Bellini family and worked closely with Giorgione. His early works are so similar in style to Giorgione's as to be indistinguishable, but soon after Giorgione's early death Titian established himself as the leading painter of the Republic of Venice. Among his most important religious paintings is the revolutionary and monumental Assumption (1516 ?C 18) for Santa Maria dei Frari, in which the Virgin ascends to heaven in a blaze of colour accompanied by a semicircle of angels. Titian was also interested in mythological themes, and his many depictions of Venus display his work's sheer beauty and inherent eroticism. Bacchus and Ariadne (1520 ?C 23), with its pagan abandon, is one of the greatest works of Renaissance art. Titian was sought after for his psychologically penetrating portraits, which include portrayals of leading Italian aristocrats, religious figures, and Emperor Charles V. He reached the height of his powers in The Rape of Europa (c. 1559 ?C 62), one of several paintings done for Philip II of Spain. Abbandonata la bottega di falegname paterna, frequenti dal 1864 l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, dove le lezioni impartitegli misero in luce le qualita innate di pittore, evidenziate in una delle sue opere maggiori La lezione di anatomia (1873). Nel 1878 compi un viaggio a Parigi insieme a Guglielmo Ciardi. Il viaggio fu determinante per l'evoluzione della sua arte, come tecnica e come soggetti (non solo scene di intimita familiare ma anche soggetti in costume settecentesco). Riscosse un ottimo successo, si fece conoscere a livello internazionale e assimilo una certa tendenza al manierismo. Del 1880 e l'opera Vandalismo, premiata a Brera, dove fu esposta ed e attualmente conservata. In queste opere l'artista si converti verso un'animazione realistica, un uso della coloristica controllato, un grande dispiego inventivo e una delicatezza tonale. Negli ultimi anni le opere del Favretto assunsero una sempre crescente luminosita ed una struttura sempre piu naturalistica. Mori nel 1887, durante l'Esposizione nazionale artistica tenutasi nella citta lagunare, nella quale l'artista esponeva Il Liston.

1854-1905 Finnish Albert Edelfelt Location Finnish painter, illustrator and etcher. He was Finland leading artist in the late 19th century, introducing French influences into Finnish art but also helping to gain a broader international interest in his country culture. He was not a great innovator, however, and although his reputation in Finland remained firm, international recognition dwindled after his death until the renewal of interest in realism that took place in the late 20th century.
